Handing over Google product videos: stable links, product mapping and versions

Distinguish files, viewing pages and product records, check source-specific Merchant Center workflows and keep replacements traceable across versions.

Separate the file, viewing page and product record

A product-video handoff should distinguish the page where people watch, the video address itself and the product it represents. Opening a link in your own browser proves one successful visit; it does not establish a valid submission or a correct product relationship.

Google's video_link requirements distinguish YouTube links from other sources. Non-YouTube links must lead to supported video files rather than player pages. Links need to remain stable and publicly crawlable, with appropriate marketing rights. Check the document's current file and content requirements before submission.

List the viewing page, file address, intended use, rights and review date separately. Ask the website or storage owner to verify signed-out access, the actual file response and crawling restrictions. Temporary previews, login-dependent shares and expiring signed addresses should not enter lasting product records without review.

Verify the exact product shown in the footage

Identify the main product and check model, colour, packaging, accessories and demonstrated functions. If several objects appear together, distinguish what is sold from what is merely a prop.

Imagine a desk demonstration showing two lamps, only one of which folds. The handoff should identify where each model appears and which performs the folding action. This fictional example illustrates why a visually attractive clip can still be associated with the wrong product.

Have the product owner confirm identity and description, the production team confirm footage and version, and the data owner confirm the submission. When dimensions, connectors, accessories or packaging change, review the affected pictures and captions instead of updating product text alone.

Check Video assets according to the source

Google's Video assets documentation describes different treatments: website videos can be mapped automatically; YouTube recommendations can be accepted, changed or rejected, with one product offer selected per video; Product Studio videos receive a quality review before saving or dismissal. These are distinct workflows.

Check the video's actual source and available controls before acting. Watch the full content before accepting a recommended product. For an automatically mapped website video, inspect the displayed result; if something is wrong, record the page, video and product details for the responsible owner. Do not assume one editing control applies to every source.

Organic product display, brand-profile display and advertising use serve different purposes. Organisation and confirmation do not guarantee placement or conversion. Review the relevant account's processing status and actual results separately. For the website layout, see the guide to Shopify video placement and media checks.

Connect every replacement to a known version

Keep product identifiers, video version, language, orientation, file and viewing addresses, source project, usage rights, submission destination, owner and last review date together. For replacements, add the reason, where the old version should stop being used and where the new one has taken effect.

Google recommends a new unique URL for changed video content in video_link. Validate the replacement file and product relationship before updating its submission. Check references against the actual processing result rather than treating a saved form as proof that every display has changed.

Track the old version as well: where it remains in use, what has been replaced and what must be withdrawn because the product or permission has changed. Preserve internal version evidence without continuing to present obsolete footage as current.
