Brand Content Planning

Directing and working inside a brand taught me to look at how a film will be used after delivery.

In production, delivering a film gives a project a clear finishing point. On the brand side, the next event, product story and channel update are still waiting.

That added a question when I looked at a film: what does this particular piece need to do?

Purpose

One product may need a film that leaves an impression, several short videos showing how it is used, and a clear answer to a specific feature question.

Put all those jobs into the main film and the script can become crowded. There is a wish to tell a story, a fear of missing a feature, and eventually only one line left for each idea.

I would write down the uses first. What should the main film leave with the viewer? Which information deserves a separate short video? What belongs in an article or a live programme? Separating them gives the creative work room for choices.

Before the shoot

It helps to discuss those uses before filming. A vertical frame, a product detail held for longer, or a moment that can stand alone may change what is needed on set.

If requests for different versions only arrive after the main edit, the material may not be there. A few questions earlier can prevent awkward crops and forced edits later.

The team

People need to know more than who shoots, edits and publishes. They need to know why a direction was chosen.

A short note can explain the main message, the product information that must stay intact and the client’s open questions. Someone joining later can then continue without having to guess.

The more files there are, the more clearly the current version needs to be marked. Sometimes work is slow because people are changing different versions of the same thing.

Reviewing results

Brand content involves e-commerce, product, event and channel teams. A livestream’s performance depends on content, but also on the offer, price, traffic and live operation.

I would establish what my team and I did before discussing what changed. Giving one film credit for every result does little to help the next project.

Skyworth Brand Content describes that part of my experience. I want the attention of a filmmaker and the practical view of a brand team to sit together: care for the film, with an understanding of where it will be used.
